2011 Annual Meeting is a “Twofer” on June 25

The Annual General Meeting of The Caledonian Society of Hawaii will be at Kapiolani Community College on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 11a.m. After a sandwich buffet beginning about 12:15, we will see a stirring DVD “When The Pipers Play,” part of an award-winning TV series on bagipes.

We will be joined for lunch and the show by members of The Hawaiian Scottish Association. Afterwards HSA will hold its Annual Meeting in the same room starting at 2 p.m.—twa meetings in ane day. This is an opportunity for the two organizations to sit down together and for Caledonians to talk to the hard-working people responsible for the muckle big Hawaiian Scottish Festival, some of whom are not members of our Society.

 The Place:

All activities will take place in a couthy (pleasant) private room, part of Ka’ikena Lau’ae Dining Room, run by the Culinary Arts Dept, at Kapiolani Community College in Ohelo Building. The campus is at 4303 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu. Expect a gorgeous braw view toward Koko Head from the big dining room windows.

The Lunch:

Create your own deli sandwich from a selection of deli meats. Special kalua pork sliders will be among your choices. Green salad with dressing and pasta salad complete your plate. Assorted breads and cheeses, sliced tomatoes and onions, leaf lettuce, carrots and celery sticks, pickles, olives, and deli style condiments will be available. Iced tea or coffee.

Cost & Reservations:

Cost for lunch is $15 per person. Reservations are required by Tuesday, June 21. Use reservation form and send with your check to The Caledonian Society, P.O. Box 4164, Honolulu, HI 96812-4164 along with names of all in your party.

If you wish to attend the business meeting but not stay for lunch, you may attend without payment, but please reserve a chair. Call Lillian at 538-7707.

A lunch reservation form can be downloaded here in .pdf form.

Directions and Parking:

Enter KCC from Diamond Head Road or Makapu’u Avenue. Tartan pennants will be taped to posts in the area to guide you. See map for directions to Ohelo Bldg.

Some parking spots for dining patrons are located behind the neighboring Ohia Bldg. Or park in one of the lower lots or Parking Lot E beyond Ohelo building. Because the campus is hilly, a little uphill walking is required past the patio and the decorative fountain up to the dining room entrance at the front of Ohelo building.

Guests with limited walking ability could park in Parking Lot E and walk from there either to the nearest end or to the front of Ohelo Building, which faces inward toward the center of the campus.

The Farmers’ Market:

The weekly Farmers’ Market on the KCC campus starts early in the morning and will, as always, generate a huge crowd and congestion. The market closes at 11 a.m. We are told that traffic on and around the campus should be flowing easily by 10:30 a.m.

The Meeting:

The annual business meeting includes reports from the previous year, election of officers and board members (About half the Council terms expire each year), and a keek (peek) at plans for next year. Please bring program ideas or other suggestions.

All annual memberships are due for renewal at the end of June, so the Treasurer and Membership Secretary will be accepting dues for 2011-2012.

An annual membership renewal form can be downloaded here.

The Entertainment:

“When The Pipers Play” is Part 3 of an impressive award-winning television series, shown on PBS and the History Channel, about the history of the great Highland bagpipe in peace and in war, produced and directed by Patrick King. Besides masterful bagpipe music, it includes songs from traditional Scottish singer Isla St. Clair. and music from the group Capercaillie. Consider this show a preview of the September 2011 concert in Honolulu by Isla St. Clair with Patrick King. This disk also shows Jim Motherwell, our 2010 Burns Night guest, who is listed among the “World’s Great Pipers.”
